Phosphinothricin (PPT) is a widely used herbicide that blocks the production glutamine through inhibition of the enzyme glutamine synthetase in plants, leading to a toxic accumulation of ammonia and impaired photosynthesis in land plants. Phosphinothricin acetyltransferases (PATs), found in soil bacteria, catalyze the acetylation of PPT rendering it inactive.
